COMMUNITY LIFE DEVELOPMENT PLANNING COHOUSING ARCHITECTURE FACILITATION
The family of Michael Allan Black is saddened to report that he left his physical form on April 9, 2008. We will maintain his website for an uncertain period for the purpose of sharing his important work with the world. Perhaps 400 mourners gathered on April 13 in his latest creation and home, Yulupa Cohousing in Santa Rosa, CA, to celebrate his life and experience the breadth of his influence on the wide circle of friends and community whom he gathered around him.

Those wishing to contact the family or leave a thought about their experience of Michael are encouraged to use the link on the contact page which will reach his wife, Alexandra Hart. Those who wish to remember him with a donation may make it directly to the Michael Black Memorial Fund, Redwood Credit Union, P. O. Box 6104, Santa Rosa, CA 95406.

Michael Black provided planning, community organization, and architectural services since the late 1960's. His early professional life was spent in Palm Springs, CA, his home town. As a tenured professor, he taught design at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) in Santa Monica. In 1983 he spent his sabbatical studying cohousing and similar models in Sweden, Denmark, and Holland. His designs and consensus-based planning have received recognition from the American Institute of Architects and the American Planning Association and have appeared in periodicals including Time Magazine.

Black's architectural design approach relied on strong client input and sensitivity to functional, environmental/sustainability, social/community, cultural, psychological and economic issues. The diversity of his designs reflects the uniqueness of each situation.
