CLOVERDALE DOWNTOWN PLAZA
The Cloverdale Plaza design is for the first phase of a two-phase implementation plan. The second phase depends on the moving of the fire station out of the downtown area. It is to contain an expanded plaza with a fountain and some additional parking.
The summer heat can be quite intense, especially in the sunlight, consequently shading of the plaza was of paramount importance. While trees are useful for shading and delightful to be around, they would take quite a long time to provide the shading that would draw people into the area in the summer. Trellis structures, on the other hand, provide immediate relief from the summer's sun. The curved form for the trellises was chosen for its graceful quality.
There is a stage area under one of the trellises and an adjoining hardscaped area for spectators and gatherings and some raised planters so that some could sit on the planter walls for a better view.
I once saw a double rainbow to the east in direct line with and echoing the curve of the entry trellis. An architect should never be without a camera.
