The approach to the design of the commercial projects reflects Michael's belief that the aesthetic of each building should ideally reflect the use of the building. In addition, each building's location informs his design.
His designs for the two structures for Pomona First Federal Bank exemplify this value. Each of these buildings appears substantially built, thereby giving the depositors a feeling of security. The Yucca Valley branch is more protective and enclosed, providing shelter from the high winds, high summer temperatures and occasional winter snows. Since it is not in a pedestrian area, the use of windows is minimized. In contrast, the Palm Desert branch on the primary pedestrian shopping street, while projecting a feeling of strength, has a feeling of transparency, which draws pedestrians in to its interior oasis.
His designs for the Where In The World shop and the Copperfield's Book Store renovation in Santa Rosa each reflect his desire to provide architectural solutions that welcome and intrigue visitors.
