DESERT HIGHLAND PARK COMMUNITY CENTER PALM SPRINGS, CA
This structure was designed to incorporate the park's existing toilet rooms
and to be built on a quite restrictive budget. The City of Palm Springs was
concerned with vandalism due to the building's location at the very edge of the
city. Windows were considered to be an invitation to those who might indulge
in target practice. The City was convinced to use three small bullet-proof
windows. Three rows of three skylights align with each of the windows to bring
more natural light into the activity space. Steel doors are aligned with each of
the windows to open the building to the exterior when the weather permits. a
thick acrylic paint covers interior plywood walls, which allows them to be
used for handball and to withstand other impacts.
