PARA LOS NIÑOS
Para Los Niņos is a daycare center that was designed to serve the largely Hispanic population living in old, substandard hotels in what is known as the skidrow of Los Angeles. It was designed as a retrofit, keeping the existing masonry building while layering a new wall over it to three-dimensionalize a playful abstraction of a colorful streetscape. This design was not realized, because a well-designed Art Deco building was found to exist under the facade when uncovered at the beginning of construction. The idea was to bring some joy into the bleak lives of the youngsters.
